Wow… it’s been a while since I have revisited using seamless tiles, and for those of you looking for a sequel to my “Basics of creating seamless tiles” tutorial, I apologize for the delay.
In writing this, I realized just how much it takes to describe how to do it right, so I decided to break it into a 2 part tutorial.
What we are going to do with these tutorials is combine a seamless tile with a little bit of CSS to create the core of a site template with low bandwidth (because we are using the same image over and over) but high impact. I use pure CSS (no tables for layout) for all of the web work that I do, as there are tons of reasons why. Cleaner code, faster loading, and proper loading of the page in blocks down the screen. There are rumors that it even improves search ranks, as the engines dont have to parse through extra <table> <td> and <tr> tags to get to the content, but from what my SEO colleagues tell me, this is totally unfounded.
If you’d like to do some reading up on using pure CSS for layout, head over here: GLISH or W3SCHOOLS
Okay… so you’ve got your seamless tile that we created in the previous tutorial, right? I’ve got mine!

Again, if you aren’t familiar with using CSS for layout, you may want to reference GLISH or W3SCHOOLS for further explanation. I will also be using raw code, as I always do.
We don’t need no stinking Dreamweaver…
To keep this tutorial simple, I am just going to use the basic tags in the html file, and use inline styles. Clearly, for a live web page, you will want your Doctype, meta tags and other info in the header, and use an external CSS file, but it’s not necessary to make this example work. So, that being said, create a new .html file in notepad or your favorite text editor, saving it as index.html in your folder from part one of this tutorial. Here’s the base code for it, which I will explain:
<html>
<head>
<title>My first pure CSS/seamless tile page</title>
<style type=”text/css” media=”screen”>

[UPDATED] WooooHoooo! I actually WON! Can you believe it!??!?!! I was totally floored when I saw my name on the winners list for this. I still am. Can’t wait to see that shiny new Nvidia 8800GTS at my door! Thanks to anyone who took the time to go vote for me!
[ CONTEST RESULTS ]
They’re running a contest to win one of three Nvidia 8800 cards, asking for people to come up with desktop images for Quakewars… Here was an idea I had, put together from numerous screenshots, etc. that I found, plus the ETQW fan pack. This compiled image doesn’t exist… I made it from different images, and the background image of the scorched road/valley scene.
Here’s the contest site: SITE
Go throw some votes my way if you can… I’d love to snag an 8800…

Here’s a computer/case I recently built and airbrushed for my girlfriend’s dad from some extra parts laying around. The poor guy was still running on Windows98 for pete’s sake… I had to do something for him…
But he owns a number of hotrods, so I felt this style was fitting…
